"You can bunk with me," said Zach in that same gruff voice. "It's too cold to sleep on the floor, and it's not like we've never slept in the same bed before."

"Yeah. Um. About that. Since it wasn't you and it wasn't me, who could it have been? Did you see any reporters you recognized at the resort?"

Zach shook his head. "No. Nobody. Everything seemed…I mean, I can't believe whoever it was snuck under the radar so well."

Colin frowned. Most people didn't even know I was going there. Something, anything: they needed a clue. Because whoever did that, whoever violated their privacy and the special thing growing between them had to be brought to some sort of justice. It mattered even more than two million dollars.

I'll have to call my detective and get him investigating. The man was clearly skilled; he'd found Zach quickly enough.

"Do you get mobile phone reception out here in this weather? I have to make a call." He rose, scraping back his chair. The sound was loud in the quiet cabin. Snow and wind beat against the rustic log walls. The stove made a small, homey, hissing sound.

Zach looked at him and shrugged. "I haven't tried, to be honest. I just wanted t-to get away from everything." He looked away again quickly.

Colin took an impulsive step closer. "About your parents. I'm sorry."

Zach raised and lowered one shoulder, not looking at him.

"They'll come around. Give it time."

"What if they don't? What if they can't accept me? Doesn't that mean they never even loved me in the first place?" He stared down at the stove, his neck and back bent with such a look of defeat.

They've really hurt him.

Colin moved closer and put a hand on his shoulder. "Family's like arms and legs. You can't just cut them off. It might take a little while, but they'll come around. My dad wasn't thrilled when I told him, but he came around."

"Yeah, but that's in England. And I bet your family isn't religious."

What's that got to do with it? Colin wanted to ask. But he knew it was a factor for some people, so he kept his mouth shut.

"Have you tried calling them again? Maybe they've already tried to reach you and couldn't because your phone was off."

Zach shut his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose, shaking his head. "I'm just so damned tired. I finally accept myself, and—and you would think I could have a few months just to live before I have to deal with how the rest of the world sees me."

Colin squeezed his shoulder gently. "It gets better."

"Damn you! No it doesn't. I'm so tired of people saying that!" he flared, turning to glare at him. "What the hell do you know? You're rich and famous and can do whatever you want. I've got publishers and editors calling me up day and night—or trying to—asking me what was it like. Not even giving a shit about my privacy and maybe it's something I'd rather keep to myself.
